PUNTERS at a Sheffield dog track have helped in raising a staggering £24,000 for charities this summer.

Owlerton Greyhound Stadium, just off Penistone Road, has raised donations for Ella’s Fund, Help for Heroes, the Army Benevolent Fund, the Master Cutler’s Challenge, Weston Park Hospital and the Retired Greyhound Fund.

Managing director John Gilburn said: “We are proud to support a range of very worthy, local charities.

“Our fundraising package has been designed to help charities and community groups raise as much money as possible for their individual causes while enjoying a night at the dogs.”

John added: “In 2010 we raised over £80,000 for various causes, and we are hoping to at least match that amount this year.”

Alan Lyons, investor development manager at Creative Sheffield, and Kevin Parkin, chairman of Parkin Ltd, co-founded the networking group Lyons Den.

The group brings together businesses and individuals from many sectors across Sheffield, and hosted an event at the stadium earlier this summer in aid of the Master Cutler’s Challenge.

Alan said: “Owlerton is an ideal venue for a fundraising event. Over 150 professionals from across Yorkshire joined us at the stadium and helped us to raise £4,000.

“The funds raised will be used to improve the employment prospects of 1,000 young people in the Sheffield region – something everyone involved in the event can be very proud about.”

24th June 2011 - Scooby-doo where are you?

Something for the weekend

Insider's round-up of some of the week's quirkiest stories and events across the region.

Scooby-doo where are you?

Has Sheffield finally gone to the dogs? Of course not, but the business community did just that this week and it was a howler. More than 170 of the city's elite stepped into the Lyons' Den and had a fun-packed night at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium while raising much-needed funds for the Master Cutler's Challenge. Never one to shun the limelight, group founder Alan Lyons took the lead for the big finale to the night by donning a Scooby-Doo costume and taking on Sheffield University's Ian Procter in a Gromit costume and Sheffield Steelers Rachel Bateson who was dressed as Steeler Dan. Needless to say Rachel showed her "metal" and led the pack to take victory in the hotly-contested race along the track. Alan said: "I put myself on the line and had to overcome my embarrassment for what turned out to be a fantastic event. My biggest concern was keeling over and having a heart attack as the headlines would read 'Scooby-Doo dies of heart attack'." With an ever-increasing membership Alan is already plotting more madcap networking nights and has two planned for the end of July. Join the group on LinkedIn to find out more.
